Fomel: Revegetation of urban space is in progress
This year, the municipality of Fomel tried an innovative system: a “vegetation permit” to increase its share of vegetation in the city. Planting trees, shrubs, flower beds… The city wants to beautify itself while accelerating its ecological transformation.
It is a new approach that comes from the municipal team and encourages residents’ participation in the beautification and maintenance of their streets “by promoting an urban atmosphere that is less metallic and more pleasant to live in.” The state of Jean-Louis Custis focuses on improving the daily lives of its residents. At the end of the health crisis, it set the tone in particular around four strong themes: mobility, security, environment and greening. The example of Leon Johu Street in the redevelopment phase is undoubtedly the most striking. The street that wants to become a “garden street” underwent a transformation at the end of 2022 with work to bring the public collective sewer network into compliance. To rehabilitate it, this street thought about adding a little green color to beautify the daily life of residents and businesses. The “revegetation permit” granted to volunteers also stipulates a charter to respect the environment by removing weeds by hand, without the use of chemical fertilizers and phytosanitary products. Residents of the lower part of Rue de la République can also participate in the maintenance of the feet of their facade.
