Volcanic eruption on the island of Tonga: the smallest tsunami hit Japan
An undersea volcanic eruption on the island of Tonga has raised tsunami warnings in the Pacific region. Smaller waves have already reached Japan, but there are warnings of bigger waves.
TOKYO – A volcanic eruption on the island of Tonga has caused a tsunami in Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency said a 1.2-meter tsunami was recorded on the remote island of Amami Oshima in the south of the country late Saturday night. Smaller tidal waves have also been recorded at several locations along the Pacific coast of Japan.
The Meteorological Authority issued a warning of waves up to three meters in height. NHK television called on residents of the affected coastal areas in a special program to reach the highlands to safety.
A volcanic eruption on the South Pacific island of Tonga triggered a tsunami there on Saturday. A tsunami wave with a height of 1.2 meters was seen in the capital, Nuku’alofa. After the volcanic eruption, tsunami warnings were issued for the west coast of the United States, Chile, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Zealand and Australia.
