After approval by the New Zealand government, the Cabinet approved the appointment of Francesco Calogero as Italian Ambassador to Wellington.

Calogero was born in Belluno on July 6, 1958 and graduated in law from the University of Naples in 1983. He entered the diplomatic service in 1987 and was appointed to the General Staff Directorate. His first overseas posting was at the Embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia, while from 1991 to 1995 he was Consul in Cape Town, South Africa, and then as Counsellor and Deputy Administrator at the Embassy in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Upon his return to Rome, Calogero worked in the Directorate General for Italians Abroad and Immigration Policies. Between 2001 and 2005 he was Consul General in Melbourne, Australia, then transferred to representation in the European Union, in Brussels, as Coordinator of the Justice and Home Affairs Sector. After moving to Rome as Head of the Office of the General Directorate of States of the Americas, since 2010 he has been diplomatic advisor to the President of the Campania region.

From 2013 to 2017, he was the Ambassador of Italy in San Jose, Costa Rica. Later, he served in the Inspectorate General in Farnesina. Effective October 26, 2020, he is the Ambassador of Italy to New Zealand, also accredited to Tonga, Samoa, Kiribati, Tuvalu, the Cook Islands and Niue. In 2005 he was made an official knight of the Order of Merit to the Republic.
