The West Indies beat New Zealand by three points as the Women’s World Cup gets off to an exciting start

Host New Zealand lost three points in the final as they lost three points to the West Indies in the opening match of the World Cup in Tauranga.

New Zealand, after rallying 162-6 in a record 260 chase, started the final round needing six six-ball runs with three wickets in hand.

However, West Indies seamstress Dendra Doten knocked out Katie Martin (44) and Jess Kerr (25) – who scored 40 for the eighth wicket – and then sacked Fran Jonas (0) as New Zealand sat for 256.

Hayley Matthews scored 119 in the West Indies’ tally of 259-9, as New Zealand captain Sophie Devine hit back with 108 in 27 deliveries.
