Russia summons the Finnish ambassador regarding a new military agreement with the United States
Moscow summoned the Finnish ambassador to Russia on Tuesday to express its opposition to a new defense pact between Finland, a new member of NATO, and the United States, which gives the latter broad access to the region surrounding the Scandinavian country’s long border with Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Finnish Ambassador “I communicated that Russia will not leave without responding the NATO military buildup on its borders, which threatens the security of the Russian Federation, and will take the necessary measures to counter the aggressive decisions of Finland and its allies,” Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed: In a press release.
In 2023, the Scandinavian country became the newest member of the transatlantic military alliance, in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The agreement concluded Monday between Helsinki and Washington lists fifteen facilities and areas in Finland where the US military will be present. It has unrestricted access and can also store military equipment and munitions, including four air bases and a military port.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that a similar 10-year agreement was signed on Tuesday between the United States and Denmark to allow American soldiers and military equipment to be stationed on Danish territory. This comes in addition to the signature signed this month with Sweden, which, unlike its neighbor Finland, is still awaiting final ratification of its membership in NATO.
