VINCI to build Penlink Road Project North Auckland (New Zealand) (06/30/2022) – Press Releases
June 30, 2022 – 5:45pm – New Contracts – New Zealand
• Design and construction of a 7 km road including the first handover bridge1 from the state
• A contract worth 510 million New Zealand dollars (305 million euros).
New Zealand’s Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has awarded the design and build contract for the Penlink project, north of Auckland, to HEB Construction – a subsidiary of New Zealand’s VINCI Construction – in a consortium with Fulton Hogan, Aurecon and Tonkin + Taylor. The nodes, of the “alliance” type, bring together the designer-builder group and the client in the same team. This infrastructure will form a key link in the region, improving the security and reliability of the navigation offer for users.
The NZ$510 million (€305 million) project includes the construction of a new 7km 2×2 highway, complete with a combined commuter lane for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as the construction of six bridges, including New Zealand’s first. The bridge has been handed over.
The chosen design and construction methods will reduce carbon emissions by up to 20% compared to a conventional design. The lower entrance to the bridge, which is 550 meters long, will blend into the landscape while reducing the total length of the bridge by 235 meters and thus the amount of steel and concrete used. The crossing is designed with two berths instead of three into the Wēiti River.
The group is committed to promoting the recycling of materials, the use of renewable energy sources and the recovery of rainwater.
The construction will be carried out while protecting the local fauna and flora through upstream studies and continuous monitoring for the duration of the work which is expected to be completed in 2026.
1 The delivered bridge is similar to both a prestressed concrete box bridge built by cascading cantilever and a cable-stayed bridge. The bridge deck is supported by prestressed tendons within the concrete and with tendons outside the concrete. The result is an overall more efficient design for bridges with medium to long spans.
