User review of the movie The Descendants for advanced readers
She arrived three weeks early – and arrested her husband. Karen (Maren Croyman) spent a year working for a grandmother in New Zealand. Now she must realize that Harald (Günter Maria Halmer) has seemingly been replaced by her husband. However, it looks as if widow Sigrid (Imogen Caughey) has already moved on. Karen leaves the house and immediately changes the locks – they are hers.
But she also gets a new mission. Her friend Philippa (Barbara Sokowa) is supposed to take over the running of the school shop “Schlüsselkinder” from her pregnant daughter, although she’s not exactly keen on it. But Philippa triumphs, and Karin and their mutual friend Gerhard (Heiner Lauterbach) are now looking after the children and young people.
Of course, it’s not as easy as you think. The kids are rebellious, know-it-alls, but they’ve gotten into the wrong place with the three adults.
“Descendants for Advanced Learners” is the name of the comedy written by Wolfgang Gross. It is a sequel to the movie “Descendants for Beginners,” which was released in cinemas in 2020.
Maren Krojmann, Barbara Sokwa and Heiner Lauterbach play energetic retirees who want to face life again for the second time. The three of them don’t fit the phrase “sharp retirees” anyway.
The film shows in a very entertaining way how parallel worlds collide. Women, men over 65 years of age and young people. The three “adults” learn from the young ones – but also the opposite. Basically, this film is a real model in this regard. It shows the ideal of coexistence between generations, which we also know is in fact just an ideal that we rarely experience.
However, the film has some really funny moments, it shows new perspectives and is thoughtful at times. Entertaining!
