A Russian journalist was arrested in Russia on charges of “extremism” and accused of participating in the production of videos for the late opposition group Alexei Navalny, the US news agency, with which he privately cooperated, reported on Sunday. Sergei Karelin is the second journalist to be arrested on these charges, after Konstantin Gabov, who was arrested on Saturday, and who sometimes cooperated with the Canadian news agency Reuters.

Sergei Karelin and Konstantin Gabov were accused of participating in the preparation of videos for the NavalnyLIVE YouTube channel of the team of Alexei Navalny, who died in prison in February under mysterious circumstances. His movement was rated as “extremist” By the courts, which exposes his collaborators and supporters to the risk of prosecution. Most of the deceased opponent's comrades live in exile abroad, while others have received long prison sentences.

The Russian authorities have increased their pressure on independent and foreign media in Russia in recent months, in the context of the comprehensive suppression of opposition voices since the start of the attack in Ukraine.
