The most famous films were filmed here!
When the Lord of the Rings films were released in cinemas more than 20 years ago, New Zealand suddenly became a popular travel destination. The filming locations are still well attended today. Prisma has six tips for all fans of films and series who want to travel according to the script and experience “jetting”.
Marrakesh, Morocco
La Mamounia Hotel in Marrakesh celebrates its centenary this year. With its luxurious rooms and charming gardens, it resembles a royal palace. No wonder Winston Churchill called it “the most beautiful place in the world” and is used to film films. One of the most famous films filmed here is “The Man Who Knew Too Much” by director Alfred Hitchcock. The impressive building was also featured in the Netflix series “Inventing Anna.”

Dubrovnik/Croatia
A city that cannot escape movie tourists is Dubrovnik in southern Croatia. In the internationally successful Game of Thrones series, the iconic ancient city of Dubrovnik, surrounded by a massive, perfectly preserved city wall, served as the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. She was also seen in the second season of Amazon Prime’s “Carnival Row” — and a guest appearance even took place under the name Ragusa, which the city of Dubrovnik bore in the 15th century. The city also served as a backdrop in the eighth part of the “Star Wars” series.
Matamata/New Zealand
Scenes set in the Shire with the hobbits in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy were filmed around Matamata. For the filming of “The Hobbit”, Hobbiton was rebuilt and left as a permanent attraction. If you want to visit the sites where Frodo and Bilbo’s journey begins, you should book a ticket for the Cinema Village Tour. This costs between $89 and $199 for adults. The attraction is open seven days a week year round.
Alnwick/United Kingdom
Alnwick Castle is located in Northumberland, about two hours from Edinburgh. The castle complex, built in 1096, is the second largest aristocratic residence in England after Windsor Castle. The castle has already served as a backdrop for many film productions. Most people will know it as Hogwarts School of Wizardry from the “Harry Potter” series, but Alnwick has also been in “Robin Hood – King of Thieves” with Kevin Costner, the “Downton Abbey” series and the action epic “Transformers – The Last Knight.” The castle to see.
Tataouine and Nefta/Tunisia
Tunisia is a prominent filming location for the films in the Star Wars saga. Parts of episodes one, two, three and four were filmed here. Therefore, it is not surprising that the city of Tataouine in the south of the country gave its name to the desert planet of Tataouine. Near Tataouine are Ksar Hadada and Ksar Ould Sultan, two granaries that served as slave dwellings in the film. Another warehouse in Medenine was used as the location for young Anakin Skywalker’s home. In the Nefta Dunes near the Algerian border, east of the large salt lake, “Star Wars” sets can still be seen today.

Tenerife/Canary Islands
The list of blockbuster films filmed in the Canary Islands is long: for example, Clash of the Titans (2010) and Wrath of the Titans (2012) were largely produced in Tenerife. Anyone vacationing on the island in the near future may be lucky enough to see a camera crew filming. The second part of the Amazon Prime series “Rings of Power” is being produced in Teide National Park in Tenerife, among other places.
