The L’Oréal UNESCO Prize for Women in Science rewards 5 female researchers

The L’Oréal-UNESCO Prize for Women in Science 2022 renews its tribute to female researchers and scientists “for the work done and the many challenges they had to overcome.” In Casablanca, the event recently welcomed five young talents in the field of research, during a ceremony to promote women’s contributions in this field. When it comes to tackling unprecedented issues like disease, the COVID-19 pandemic, and climate change, women have always been on the front lines. Yet women scientists are still underrepresented, even though they have a say today in dealing with the biggest crises facing the world.

As part of this initiative, each of the five young researchers will receive a grant of €10,000 to help them carry out postdoctoral projects. This year is about two Moroccan researchers, Lamia El Khatabi (Life Sciences, Environment and Biological Sciences – Hassan II University of Casablanca) and Sarah El Mekawi (Formal Computer Science and Information Sciences – Mohammed V University Rabat), two Algerian researchers, Sarah Ben Azouz (Life and Environment Sciences, Biological Sciences – Houari Boumediene University, Algeria) and Rima Oshin (Life and Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences – Bejaia University), as well as the Tunisian researcher Yathrib Al-Yaqoubi (Life and Environment Sciences and Agricultural Sciences – University of Carthage).

This year, in its sixteenth edition in Morocco and the ninth edition in the Maghreb, L’Oréal – UNESCO honored these five young Moroccan women for their “outstanding research”. The idea is also to “support them in the pursuit of a successful scientific career, in different fields: earth and environmental sciences, computer science and engineering, medical biotechnology and technology, and biological sciences.”
