The European Union fears the “collapse” of Tunisia
“If Tunisia collapses, this threatens to cause a flow of migrants towards the European Union and cause instability in the Middle East and North Africa region. We want to avoid this situation,” Josep Borrell, head of diplomacy in Brussels, said on Monday.
The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, announced today, Monday, that the European Union is concerned about the deteriorating political and economic situation in Tunisia and fears the collapse of the country.
“The situation in Tunisia is very dangerous,” he warned after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
“President Kais Saied must sign with the International Monetary Fund”
He explained that the ministers had asked Belgium and Portugal to send representatives on a mission to Tunisia to conduct an “assessment of the situation to enable the European Union to direct its actions.”
“The European Union cannot help a country that is unable to sign an agreement with the International Monetary Fund,” he said.
He stressed that “President Kais Saied must sign with the International Monetary Fund and implement the agreement, otherwise the situation will be very dangerous for Tunisia.”
President Said has granted himself all powers since July 25, 2021 and has arrested many personalities. The main opposition parties denounce the “authoritarian drift” that is undermining the young democracy that emerged from the first uprising of the Arab Spring in 2011.
