The best summer of my childhood

The best summer of my childhood

Brothers Christian and Matthias Reinaker from Aschersleben spent their summer holidays at the most popular camping site in the GDR – in Prerow. More than 30 years later, they have rebuilt the old family tent in the dunes. Memories awaken of an attitude to life that is still deeply rooted today as a place of longing: from washing in the morning on the Baltic Sea, digging a refrigerator in the sand, collecting driftwood to build camping furniture to the nudist culture that young people grew up on the beach is not always easy. A special sense of community quickly turning strangers into friends and the feeling of a second home on the shore of the Baltic Sea has been around for decades. Once Prerow, always Prerow.

The MDR entertainment docu-format “The Best Summer of My Childhood” tells the past and present in separate episodes. Of memory, time and rediscovery. From summer vacation then and now. In each episode, we bring one of the heroes back to where they used to spend the holidays and take them back to the most beautiful summer of their childhood. He rediscovers the places with which he connects unforgettable childhood memories. What was it like then and what has changed since then? What has been preserved and what has been irretrievably lost?
