Sundhag is no longer Brazil’s coach after the World Cup defeat
After the defeat in the World Cup, the Brazilian Football Confederation decided to dismiss Pia Sundhage (63 years old) as coach of the national team.
RIO DE JANEIRO – “As of today, we will terminate Villa’s employment with the Brazilian Football Confederation,” Ednaldo Rodriguez, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, was quoted as saying in a statement. The star coach’s contract was originally to run until the 2024 Olympic year, but after a disappointing preliminary round exit at the last World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Sundhage’s tenure is ending prematurely. The association said that the succession is scheduled to be decided in the coming days.
Sundhage took over as coach of the national team shortly after the 2019 World Cup after Brazil’s previous failure in the round of 16 against hosts France. Sandhaj has previously coached footballers in her native Sweden and the USA, among others.
In Australia and New Zealand, the tournament ended early for the South American team after Sundhage’s team finished third in preliminary group six behind France and Jamaica despite winning the opening match 4-0 over Panama. That was not enough to move forward. dpa
