Sports | Rugby: DuPont nominated again for World Player of the Year award

The World Rugby team announced, today, Monday, the nomination of Antoine Dupont, winner of the 2021 tournament, once again for the title of best player of the year, which will be awarded on Sunday in Monaco.

The Blues captain was selected alongside Lukhanyo Am who has three quarters South African and two Irish, third line Josh van der Flier and opening half Johnny Sexton, who already took home this award in 2018.

Grand Slam author of the Six Nations Championship with France 15th, which could end the year undefeated if she passes against Japan on Sunday during the third fall Test, DuPont is the favourite.

Before him, two more Frenchmen were honored with the titles of the best player in the world: former half of the Scrum and current coach Fabien Galthe, in 2002, and former third rower Thierry Dusautter, in 2011.

Only New Zealanders Dan Carter (2005, 2012, 2015), Richie McCaw (2006, 2009, 2010) and Boden Barrett (2016, 2017) have been so far.

The 2022 FIFA World Player of the Year will be chosen by a jury made up of former international players, including McCaw, Desauutter or Australia’s Drew Mitchell.

His name will be revealed on Sunday at a gala in Monaco, where several other awards will be awarded, including the Coach of the Year award, for which tricolor coach Fabian Galthe was chosen.

France’s half Laure Sansus, who was injured in the first match at the recent Women’s World Cup in New Zealand, is nominated for the title of World Player of the Year.
