Sports – Club World Cup: Arriving in Tangiers from the Seattle Sounders
The North American team, Seattle Sounders FC, arrived at Tangier International Airport, Thursday, to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup, which will be held in Morocco from February 1 to 11 in the cities of Rabat and Tangier.
The Seattle Sounders, winners of the CONCACAF Champions League, will start their adventure in the Club World Cup by facing the Egyptian club Al-Ahly, who easily dominated (3-0) the new club from Auckland City, representing the Oceania Football Confederation, in the first round match of the Mondialito.
The Seattle Sounders, the first team from Major League Soccer to lift the CONCACAF Cup, are the first team from the United States to play in the Club World Cup, which is being held for the third time in Morocco.
North American coach Brian Schmitzer, in a statement to M24, showed his delight at the “warm welcome” given to his coach who appreciated such hospitality able to help him favor the match ahead.
Referring to the chances of Seattle Sounders during the World Cup, Mr. Schmitzer indicated that the players are ready and excited for the first match that will be held on Saturday, adding that his team is confident in their abilities for this meeting.
“We are aware of the fact that we will face a strong team. We watched the (opening) match and we know that Al-Ahly is a strong team, a good level and they have good strikers.”
The Seattle Sounders coach indicated that the match against Al-Ahly was a challenge, noting that it was a difficult confrontation and that the opponent should always be respected.
The winner of the Seattle Sounders-Al Ahly match will face Real Madrid in the Mondialito semi-finals on April 8th at the Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat.
