In the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Spain beat the Netherlands after extra time.

The Spaniards had to curl through extra time in Wellington as Stephanie van der Graagt equalized in extra time. Before that, the Iberians, who had dominated the first half in particular and hit the post twice, took the lead in the 81st minute. The ball bounced into the hands of late Dutch top scorer Mariona Caldente who converted the penalty kick across the inside of the post.

Substitute Selma Baralelo finally scored the winning goal for Spain in the 111th minute. The 19-year-old from FC Barcelona completed a counter-attack with a powerful left-footed shot.

Spain, who eliminated Switzerland in the Round of 16, are in their first World Cup semi-final. There, Jorge Vilda’s team meets Japan or Sweden. The two teams meet in the second quarter-final from 9:30 am.
