Sam Bird stays with Jaguar
ePrix kit-winner Sam Bird enjoyed what he saw from Jaguar in his first season with the English side, so much so that he agreed to a multi-season contract extension on Wednesday.
After six campaigns with Virgin in which he scored eight wins – and finished third in the top drivers’ standings in the 2017-2018 season – Bird jumped to Jaguar in 2020-2021. He managed three podiums, including two victories.
“My first season with Jaguar taught me everything I needed to know: I wanted to stay part of the family,” Bird said in a statement. The entire team is determined, focused and ready to deliver results and that is exactly what I want to work with.”
Saying he is happy to have a driver able to put himself at the front of the field frequently, team principal James Barkley now wants everyone to focus on next season, but also on developing the car for the third generation. (Gen3) which will debut in 2023.
Like last year, Bird will have a teammate Mitch Evans in 2022. The New Zealander didn’t win a race last season, but he still has three more points than Bird in the standings, thanks in part to his five third places.
The Formula E campaign kicks off on January 28 with the first round of the ePrix in Daraya, Saudi Arabia. All races will be broadcast on TVA Sports.
