“It is a symbolic and personal pride to have the opportunity to rethink one of the most iconic shirts in the history of the sport and to now be part of the All Blacks’ legacy as a Reunion national born in France.“, trust.
Following the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, Adidas and the All Blacks were searching for a new artist designer. The first contact took place in June 2021, and Florent then worked for several months on the technical and artistic side of the shirt with feedback from the players.
“I was able to look at the different jerseys and different fern logos that the All-Blacks have had throughout history, and I was inspired to create a one-line version, a simpler version of the fern, something that might resemble a signature. Inspiration for the design came from a mixture of a New Zealand fern called ‘Silver Fern’ and a species of fern found in France ‘Osmond Royal’. One with sharp, pointed leaves and the other with more rounded leaves, 15 ferns for the 15 players on the field, drawn individually in a single line representing team unity. They are all facing inwards, moving in the same direction, with the same goal, positioned on the chest like a protective seal that forms a sign symbolizing the brotherhood of the players.“, explains the artist.
Fans will have the opportunity to admire this shirt during the opening match of the upcoming World Cup on September 8.
