A family in New Zealand had an unusual encounter with an animal this week. A curious young seal broke into a family home, quarreled with the house cat and hung around the house for a few hours before the family discovered her.

The strange story took place in Tauranga, a town on the North Island of New Zealand, about a three-hour drive from Auckland. The inquisitive animal is said to have been a New Zealand seal skin. Ironically, the animal crept into the home of a marine biologist from all over the place. Unfortunately, Phil Ross was not home at the time of the crime – a fact which he regretted in media interviews. He joked to the Australian Guardian newspaper that this was the only family emergency where it made sense to have a marine biologist in the house. “I could have shined there, but I missed the opportunity.”
animal thief early morning
The seal must have crept into the house, which is about 150 meters from the shore, early in the morning. You probably entered the house through the cat’s door. Ross mentioned that his wife heard something barking and barking at six in the morning. But then she thought there was a dog in the neighborhood and went to the gym without hesitation. When she came back at 7 am and opened the door, she came across the little seal in the house. “I got a little startled and crawled down the hall into the guest room,” the researcher said.

The scientist believed that the seal eventually followed the cat home. You may have met the latter in the garden. “The cat was definitely defending its territory and obviously seals weren’t as terrifying as some dogs,” he said. The couple’s children in particular reacted enthusiastically when they discovered the “new pet”. “They thought it was really cool and exciting,” Ross said. The seal ended up spending some time in the guest room and on the sofa before his wife could maneuver him out the front door into the garden.
Like an adventurous teenager
Later in the morning, a toy ranger from the New Zealand Environment Agency released the family from their unusual new pet. He returned the animal to the sea. Incidentally, the seal miraculously did no harm – only the cat was “completely shocked,” as Ross reported.
According to the expert, it is not uncommon to see baby seals roaming the area at this time of year. Now in August – one of the winter months in New Zealand – the young are slowly weaning from their mother and becoming independent. “Like all teens, they don’t always make sensible decisions,” he said. In general, the New Zealand fur seal population is back slightly, according to local reports. However, like many wild animals, seals’ cute appearance can be deceiving. Mammals can become dangerous and react aggressively, especially when they feel threatened. That is why the “fans” must maintain a distance of at least 20 meters.
35 km from the coast
The New Zealand seal wasn’t the only animal that got lost this week. The seal was also lost in Australia – but in this case it was not a teenager, but a sick older animal. The latter was found in a pasture in Victoria – about 35 kilometers from the nearest beach. It is not yet clear how the animal finally entered the cattle field, the animal may have successfully crossed local rivers and streams.

However, unlike the case of the young seals in New Zealand, the Australian actor’s journey ended in tragedy. A team from Melbourne Zoo, who were called in to help, concluded that the animal was too old and not in good health and therefore would not have made the trip back to sea. The animal had to be euthanized.
