Raymond Gbagwedi died at his home surrounded by his family, on Sunday, March 26, 2023, in the early morning. Arriving in Martinique in 1969, this doctor from Benin was one of the medical community’s most respected doctors and a humanitarian. He was 87 years old.


At Lamentin Hospital, Raymond Gbagwede has practiced as a surgeon since the beginning of his career.

This practitioner of Beninese origin, was respected by the medical community in Martinica and one of the most appreciated patients.

He always gave everything for his profession, and he gave everything for his family… He was very humane and very generous.

Arrived in Martinique in 1969, He was head of the department at the age of 33 and accompanied the development of hospital medicine on the island.

One of his relatives at the time, Dr. Alex Ranlin, said to himself “very touched” this disappearance. remembers a man “Competent and close to the people.”

He greatly contributed to the effect of surgery in the hospital (…). Not only was he a competent and observant surgeon, but he was also humane, close to the people, listening to the population and was versatile.

Dr. Gbagwedi died at his home, in Lamentin, on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at dawn, surrounded by his family. He was the father of three daughters (Sika, Céline, and Anne-Laure) and the grandfather of five grandchildren.

Raymond Gbagwede, who has been retired from hospitals since 2002, celebrated his 87th birthday on January 23.
