Nigel Owens supports Mathieu Raynal after his decision in the Australia-New Zealand match
The target of much criticism from Australia since Thursday, French referee Mathieu Raynal is also benefiting from some support, starting with this weight, for former Welsh referee Nigel Owens.
In Thursday’s match between Australia and New Zealand, Mr Renal converted a penalty to the Wallabies’ advantage in the All Blacks’ scrum for the time it took Australian Bernard Foley to clear his side, despite several warrant calls from the referee. With the end of the organizing time approaching.
In the process, the All Blacks scored the winning attempt (39-37), sparking misunderstanding and/or anger from Australian staff and some local media.
This Saturday, Nigel Owens gave his reading of the situation, posting a video to Twitter of the movement with no comment other than that taken by partial referee Matthew Raynal. Obviously we hear the French referee asking Foley several times to hit the key without delay.
“Clear communication and a warning to the player (to tell him to play without wasting time). Fair and solid refereeing decision from Raynal in my opinion. Here, it is not for the referee to learn but for the players to play when the referee demands it”Owens writes.
Other voices, including those made by former England international Andy Judd, were also heard in support of Mathieu Raynal’s decision.
