New Zealand wants to switch to football
Always associated with rugby, New Zealand now wants to be a nation of interest in the world of football, particularly women’s football. For this purpose, the New Zealand Football Association (NZF) has put in place various tools aimed at developing a football community among young girls. The “Kickin’it” kick-off soccer program has been launched at six centers across the country. “Girls can spontaneously step in and come and experience a game of football with friends in a fun and safe environment,” says Annalie Longo, 127-match player and NZF Women’s Football Development Manager.
Ultimately, the idea is to create junior divisions across the country, while football schools remain mostly co-ed. NZF is also committed to bringing the sport to new areas. Paula Hansen, the association’s inclusion officer, explains: “We want everyone to have access to the game. That’s how we approached the settled Maori communities in the far north of the country. These are generally under-represented and we are working alongside the Aotearoa Football Association (‘New Zealand’ in Maori) so that is no longer the case.
