For the World Cup in France, the All Blacks are playing in a jersey designed by artist Fey The Wolf. However, fans don't seem to like it.
For the 2023 World Cup, the All Blacks have let artist Fey The Wolf take care of the design of the jersey worn by the players. It is clear that the tradition of having black throughout the jersey has been respected. It is a symbol of Maori culture that represents wisdom, life and wisdom. The artist stood out by adding the fern, the emblem of the national team. Fey The Wolf decided to have 14 filigrees on the jacket knowing that the 15th is the coat of arms located at heart level. The number represents the 15 players on the pitch in the squad. “The 14 different sized ferns symbolise the diversity of the current squad,” the New Zealand Rugby Union explained. “Each one faces inwards to create the ‘USO’ branding, a Samoan term meaning brother, in honour of the bond between the All Blacks.” When announcing the jersey, the artist highlighted the concepts of “brotherhood” and “acceptance of differences in origin and age.”
The shirt is not satisfactory
Unfortunately for Fey The Wolf, the New Zealand public doesn’t seem to appreciate his World Cup jacket. On social media, we can read criticisms such as “A kid just ruined an All Blacks jersey!”, “This is hideous! How can you ruin a black shirt to such an extent?”, “It’s like we asked a goth to design a Hawaiian shirt!”
What also angers All Blacks fans is that the artist who designed this shirt is French. In fact, Adidas wanted a figure from the host nation to design the shirt in order to “create a connection between New Zealand and France.”
