New Zealand has been left empty-handed when it comes to film production
“I informed the government of this decision yesterday,” Economic Development Minister Stuart Nash said, expressing his disappointment at the move.
“Amazon Studios plans to continue post-production work on Season 1 in New Zealand until June 2022. Filming on Season 2 will begin in the UK.” Nash said Amazon wants to expand its production area in Great Britain and expand its presence there.
The American company is spending $465 million on filming the first season alone. As a result, New Zealand is now withdrawing a five percent funding subsidy from its film production grant. An additional 20 percent support has already been requested, according to the government.
Amazon has been filming in Auckland since last year and employs more than 1,200 people in production. Another 700 are involved indirectly, according to the New Zealand government. A positive impact on New Zealand's economy and tourism has been expected for years.
