Munich Film Museum Honors Director Jane Campion (Das Piano) – Munich
When we talk about Jane Campion, the word ‘first’ quickly falls out: the director, born in New Zealand to a theater director and actress, got her first Grand Prix in Cannes: there she won the Palme d’Or for best short film (“An Exercise in Discipline: Peel”) , followed seven years later by another Golden Palm for Best Feature Film (“The Piano”). She was the first woman ever to win this award. “The Piano” was a worldwide hit, and Campion was nominated for several Academy Awards. But it wasn’t until 2022 that she won a director’s Oscar for “The Power of the Dog.” This makes her the first director to be nominated twice.
Jane Campion earned her place in cinema history long ago, and now the Munich Film Museum is honoring her with a retrospective: All nine of her feature films will be shown, from Two Friends (out May 19) to My Love (May 20), The Piano (2 June) and “Holly Smoke” (June 9) to “Dog Power” (June 23). Campion’s short films and the first season of “Top of the Lake” are also scheduled to be shown.
