1) Crook Manifesto

PIA blog shows how digital social media, influencers, and celebrities have made reading cool again. Whether on paperback, ebooks, or audiobook, books have possibly never been bigger. Crook Manifesto is without a doubt one of the most anticipated books of 2023. The latest book by the American novelist Colson Whitehead is the second instalment in the Harlem trilogy. Colson is best known for his 2016 novel, The Underground Railroad, which earned him a Pulitzer Award in 2017. Whitehead is hailed by The Guardian as “incapable of writing a bad book”, and has recently, in 2020, become one of only four authors to win two Pulitzers.

His new novel is a follow-up to the 2021 book, Harlem Shuffle. Crook Manifesto follows Ray Carney, a furniture store owner, as he navigates the social movements and cultural awakenings of New York City in the 1970s. The narrative kicks off as the main character looks for tickets for a Jackson 5 concert. From here readers will go on a kaleidoscopic ride all the way to 1976.

2) Happy Place

In the past few years, the New York Times bestselling author, Emily Henry, has established herself as one of the leading romance authors. Her two previous releases, People We Meet on Vacation and Book Lovers, earned her two consecutive Goodreads Choice Awards in both 2021 and 2022, but also made her one of Gen Z’s favourite writers as reported by NPR.

In her latest book, Happy Place, she tells the story of Harriet and Wyn, a couple who parted ways over five months ago. However, when joining their best friends on their annual getaway, they decide to pretend they are still together. The result is yet another laugh-out-loud romantic adventure that promises to match her previous releases.

3) The Wind Knows My Name

Isabel Allende, one of the most famous writers in the world, returns with her latest novel, The Wind Knows My Name. The Chilean-born writer is known for novels such as The House of the Spirits and City of the Beast. She is one of the most important Spanish-language authors of the last 50 years and was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom attributed by Barack Obama in 2014.

Her 22nd fiction release is set in two different historical periods. The book merges past and presents to follow the path of two characters who have both been forced to leave their home counties to escape violence.

On the one hand, we get to know Samuel, who tries to escape the Austrian Nazi regime and heads to England in 1938. On the other, Allende tells the story of Anita, who flees El Salvador with her mother in 2019. They head for the US and upon their arrival are separated at the border.
