Jane Campion’s new movie – Masterful Villain
clever meanness
“The Power of the Dog” with Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst is the hottest iron on Netflix for the upcoming Academy Awards. Why could it work?
“What or what? Was that twelve years ago?” Jane Campion can hardly believe her last feature film was so long ago. “Well, I’ve been pretty busy at the moment,” says the director. that’s right. For example, with two seasons of her multi-award winning series “Top of the Lake” about the mysterious murders of women in New Zealand and Australia.
But now the 67-year-old is back with “The Power of the Dog,” a movie in which two brothers argue in 1925 for control of a Montana cattle ranch. While reserved George (Jesse Plemons) is future-oriented, loves to drive, wears a thin line and brings home an attractive widow named Rose (Kirsten Dunst), his brother Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) continues to have a retrograde animosity toward everything and everyone.
