Historic victory for the Philippines over New Zealand in the World Cup
After their first match in the World Cup on Friday against Switzerland (0-2), the Philippines achieved a historic performance in their selection history. On Tuesday, the New Zealand national team achieved its first victory in the competition, against its guest, New Zealand (1-0).
After quickly confiscating the ball, the Philippines put all their resources into defense and fell short to New Zealand. Better yet, they scored the only goal of the match. After a free kick, New Zealand’s defense was unable to free itself, and the cross hit Sarina Bolden’s head with the mark (24).
New Zealand pressed for the next 60 minutes to come back. Having seen his shot hit the post (64), Jackie Hand, striker of “Football Ferns”, thought about scoring the equalizer, finally refusing a millimeter offside (68). The Filipino goalkeeper was flawless on her line and saved her at 90+3.
With this historic success, the Philippines is temporarily back at the top of Group A with New Zealand and Switzerland, all within 3 points (ahead of Switzerland and Norway at 10am this Tuesday). Today’s opponents will seek to qualify for the round of 16, Sunday at 9 am. The Philippines will face Norway while the host country will challenge Switzerland.
