The ceremony was held in the presence of Mr. Barrell’s family. For the occasion, an honorary plaque was unveiled to celebrate the legacy of this science pioneer at the University of Montreal. Hall Georges-H.-Baril now occupies the former Garden Hall.
A little history
Georges Hermel Barel is one of those who laid the foundations for the development of science at the University of Montreal. Co-founder of the Faculty of Science and the Department of Chemistry, both established in 1920, he devoted his career to the university, both in managing its various bodies and in teaching chemistry. Mr. Barrell has successively, and sometimes concurrently, held the positions of Director of the Department of Chemistry, Secretary and Dean of the Faculty of Science, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and even Registrar.
We will remember in particular his outstanding contribution to the development of science in the French language, not only in the faculties of science and medicine at the University of Montreal, but also within associations such as Acfas, of which he was president in 1935. He defended Hermel Barel in all forums, notably in several episodes Conferences, on the idea that science and technology are essential vectors for the prosperity of nations. Almost a century later, this discourse is still relevant today.
