FIFA The Best: Preliminary Report
World champion Lionel Messi against Kylian Mbappe or Karim Benzema? Indeed, the signs are clear: World Cup champions Argentina are the frontrunners in the FIFA World Footballer of the Year election. Once again, Messi could cause disappointment in France at the FIFA Best Football Awards in Paris on Monday (9pm) – taking home the award for the seventh time.
The 35-year-old capped off his career in Qatar by winning the World Cup Final (4-2 on the pens) and being named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Mbappe, Messi’s teammate at Paris Saint-Germain, scored three goals for France in the final to become the team’s top scorer. Benzema injured in Equipe Tricolor, his chances of succeeding last year’s winner Robert Lewandowski should be slim despite the Champions League title with Real Madrid.
As with men, for women, too, the decision is made without German participation. In addition to the English European champion Beth Mead, the American star Alex Morgan and the Spanish Alexia Potellas are also nominated. Deputy European champions Lena Oberdorf and Alexandra Popp from Wolfsburg were in the preliminary selection, but they did not receive the required number of votes.
On the other hand, the national player Anne-Kathrin Berger of Chelsea, who announced that she had thyroid cancer again after the European Championship 2022, is one of the finalists in the global goalkeeper elections, as was the case last year. The world’s goalkeeper and best coach will also be honored on Monday. In addition, the Puskas Award is awarded for the coolest goal of the year.
National coaches, captains of national teams, journalists and fans can participate in the vote. Since 2016, FIFA elections have again been held separately from France Football’s Ballon d’Or.
