This is not entirely accurate. Here’s what will happen if Trump is impeached.

What is the accusation?

The incumbent president, his deputy, and any civil servant can be prosecuted for various crimes including treason, bribery, or other serious crimes and misdemeanors.

Post-presidential pension

Former presidents receive a large pension after leaving office. to me GoBankingRates, Presidents Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton receive annual pensions of $ 205,700 (NZ $ 286,878.48). Barack Obama is said to be receiving $ 207,800. Trump will receive a similar amount.

The value of the pension is determined by the law of the former president, and is usually equivalent to the salary of an executive department head. It is paid for the remainder of the life of the former president, but if they hold a certain or elected position in or under the federal government, the pension is temporarily suspended.

If Trump is impeached by the House of Representatives and is not accused by the Senate and removed from office, he will still receive his pension.

If the Senate votes to convict him and remove him from office, he loses it.

Secret Service details

There is no clear and concise rule about whether the Secret Service’s life-long details will remain for a former president removed from office.

Two laws – the Ex Presidents Act and the Ex Presidents Protection Act, which Obama introduced in 2013 – are inconsistent. The first says that any president who is removed from the Senate is not considered a “ex-president” and thus will not receive the privileges. However, the latter authorizes the protection of the Secret Service for the rest of the life of the former president without specifying the “ex-president”.

Whether Trump would lose that privilege if removed remains stuck in the air.

Return to the White House

A ban on Trump running again does not automatically happen if he is impeached, convicted, and impeached. It requires an additional vote in the Senate.

A majority of the senators need to agree to the ban. However, the waters are a bit murky because the constitution does not specifically address the impeachment of the president. Rather, it talks about removing someone from “any position of honor, trust, or gain.”
