” The December 10 summit recognized that Mohamed Bazoum’s government had effectively been overthrown through a military coup. », confirms the ECOWAS Commission in its press release.
According to the regional organization, the Conference of Heads of State and Government, until last Sunday, December 10, considered Mohamed Bazoum, who has not yet resigned, to be President of Niger, and therefore members of his government can represent the country in regular meetings. .
Henceforth, the coup was officially registered, and Niger’s membership in ECOWAS decision-making bodies was suspended until constitutional order was restored.
Thus, the Economic Community of West African States responds to the criticism of the National Council for Social Security, whose spokesman expressed his dissatisfaction, due to the participation of members of Mohamed Bazoum’s government in the summit. He added that the provocation “is likely to undermine any effort to find a diplomatic and negotiated solution to the current political situation.”
The Economic Community of West African States appointed a committee on Sunday to begin discussions with the CNSP.
The organization is paving the way for easing sanctions, while asking Niamey to adhere to a roadmap for a short-term transitional phase.
