Coronavirus: New Zealand takes another step in reopening its borders

Travelers from certain countries who have a passport do not need to apply for a visa prior to their visit to New Zealand. From Monday, immune travelers from these countries, including Belgium, can once again enter New Zealand. Visitors must undergo a COVID screening test prior to departure and upon arrival but must not adhere to quarantine.

Tourism Minister Stuart Nash said thousands of travelers were expected to arrive at New Zealand’s airports on Monday.

“Today is a day of celebration and a wonderful time for us to reconnect with the world,” said Mr. Nash. He added: “Our reconnection strategy not only allows us to bring families and friends together, but is also a critical step in promoting our economic recovery.”

He said about 33,000 people are arriving in New Zealand every week and that number is likely to rise as border restrictions are eased.

The borders are expected to reopen unconditionally in October.

New Zealand, with a population of 5 million, has recorded nearly 1 million cases of Covid-19 and 700 virus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic. It closed its borders to all travelers in March 2020.
