Bernie Sanders Calls on Joe Biden to… Stay in US Presidential Race
United States – He has found a powerful ally. Under pressure to withdraw due to doubts about his health, Joe Biden received a major boost on Saturday, July 13, from American leftist figure Bernie Sanders, who called for the 81-year-old Democratic president's candidacy to be preserved.
“Enough! Mr. Biden may not be the perfect candidate, but he will be the candidate and he should be the candidate. With an effective campaign that speaks to working families about their needs, he will not only defeat Mr. Trump, but he will defeat him by a lot.”The 82-year-old senator announced in a column in The New York Timescalling on democrats “To stop the bickering and fooling around”.
Since the disastrous debate on June 27 against Republican candidate Donald Trump (78 years old), Joe Biden has been subjected to intense criticism regarding his physical and mental state. Some 20 lawmakers are now calling on him to step down.
“The presidential election is not an entertainment contest.”
That's why Bernie Sanders, the unsuccessful candidate against Joe Biden in the 2020 Democratic primary, wanted to show his support on Saturday, stressing that he would do so. “Doing everything he can to get President Biden re-elected.”.
“Yes. I know that Mr. Biden is old, has a habit of gaffes, has a stiff gait, and had a disastrous debate against Mr. Trump. But I also know that a presidential election is not an entertainment contest. It doesn’t start or end with a 90-minute debate.”he is writing.
The senator also takes an example from the recent French legislative elections: “It is time to learn a lesson from the progressive and centrist forces in France, who, despite their deep political differences, united this week to defeat right-wing extremism head-on.”.
“I am a candidate and we will win”
But the Democrat reaffirmed Friday in Michigan (north) that he would indeed be a candidate. “There has been a lot of speculation lately. What will Joe Biden do? Will he stay in the race? (…) I am a candidate and we will win.”Joe Biden fired a galvanizing salute to his supporters in Detroit.
All the polls since the debate suggest that his disastrous performance, while raising concerns among Americans about his ability to govern for long, does not shift the electoral lines much.
But many seem to be giving Republicans a relative advantage in November, and the most worrying trend for the Democrat is his continued delay in some crucial states.
Meanwhile, more than half of American Democrats believe Joe Biden should drop out of the White House race, according to a poll released Thursday. According to an Ipsos poll for The Washington Post-ABC News, 56% of Democrats and 67% of those surveyed believe the president should withdraw his candidacy.
However, Joe Biden and Donald Trump are neck and neck nationally, with each receiving 46% of voting intentions.
