Belgium’s Kamiel Bonneu wins stage three of the Tour of Britain (video)
Kamiel Bonneu won the third stage of the bike race at the Tour of Britain (2.Pro), Tuesday, between Durham and Sunderland (163.6 km). The Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise rider settled on a group of four riders who left early in the race. He beat Canada’s Benjamin Perry (WiV SunGod), Britain’s Alexander Richardson (Saint Piran) and Dutchman Mattijs Bashins (Bingual Bowls Society WB). New Zealander Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) is barely holding his leader’s jersey. Four passengers survived after ten kilometers: Camille Bono (Sport Valander-Balois), Dutchman Matisse Bashins (Bingual Bowles Society WB), Canadian Benjamin Perry (Way in Sun Jude) and Britain’s Alexander Richardson (St Piran). The gap increased to 5 minutes.
In the rain, the quad still had a two-minute lead on the peloton after the last climb of the day, High Moorsley, 20km off the line. The gap was greatly reduced, and the group started in the last kilometer with a lead of about twenty seconds.
The group resisted the return of the peloton. In the uphill finish, Bonneu put his effort into the 500m line and left no chance for his rivals. The 23-year-old rider would have claimed his second career win, after a stage at the Sazka Tour in August.
Perry came second, ahead of Richardson and Buchens. Jordi Mewes (BORA-hansgrohe) finished fifth. The organizers considered that there was no gap between Bonneu and the peloton organized by Meeus, which included the red jersey Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech). The latter is still a leader with Berry at the same time.
Wednesday’s fourth stage will take place over 149.5 kilometers between Redcar and Duncombe Park, Helmsley. This 18th edition will end Sunday evening with stage 8 at The Needles on the Isle of Wight.
