Women’s World Cup semi-final: Can Australia surprise England?
For Australia, the highlight of the tournament so far has been the quarter-finals, which they won. On Sunday (August 12), France were sent home after a grueling 120 minutes without a goal thanks to a 7-6 victory on penalties. “The bravery and courage shown by everyone is unbelievable. It’s not about the medal, it’s about the heart that beats. And for the heart that beats in this country,” Swedish Federation coach Tony Gustafsson said in the loudest tones of his daughters.
Another top-flight player now awaits the team around superstars Sam Kerr and Mary Fowler in the semi-finals. The European champions defeated surprising Colombia in their quarter-final clash. As in the round of 16 against Nigeria, the Lionesses struggled, but in the end they deserved to win 2-1. Three European teams are now in the top four, along with Spain, who defeated Sweden 2-1 in the first semi-final on Tuesday (15 August).
Women’s World Cup – Germany were eliminated in the group stage
But for DFB-choice fans, the tournament will also be remembered as a disappointment. National coach Voss Tecklenburg’s team was eliminated in the preliminary round. The opening undisputed victory over Morocco was followed by a defeat by Colombia and a draw by South Korea. Association president Bernd Neuendorf expressed confidence in the coach immediately after his disgrace, but there were growing signs of disharmony in the team structure.
Sporting-wise, the DFB’s women will be challenged again from September 22 in the Nations League with the opening match against Denmark. Important points for Olympic qualification should be collected here. (Nicky)
