Australia and New Zealand refuse to sponsor Saudi Arabia
In the summer, the World Women’s Soccer Championship is held in Australia. The host associations are clearly critical of a potential sponsor now.
Host soccer associations Australia and New Zealand are opposing the Saudi Tourism Board as a potential sponsor of this summer’s Women’s World Cup.
According to a report by Athletic Portal, Visit Saudi will be a partner in the tournament from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand. The German national team, led by Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, will play there in the preliminary round against Morocco, Colombia and South Korea.
“shocked and disappointed to hear this”
Saudi Arabia is generally criticized internationally for its human rights violations. The kingdom wants to host the men’s World Cup in 2030 and is therefore pushing ahead with sports policy efforts. On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia won the hosting of the 2027 Asian Football Championship.
“If this report proves to be true, we will be shocked and disappointed to hear it,” the New Zealand Football Association said in a statement. FIFA was not consulted on this matter. According to the report, both unions have sent a letter of protest to FIFA. The World Assembly has been asked to comment.
