An all-out lioness in Berlin, who was probably a wild boar

Since Thursday morning, German law enforcement authorities have been searching for an animal that was identified as “wild” and “dangerous” after a video was broadcast showing the silhouette of a cat on the side of the road.

The mayor of Kleinmachnow, where the beast was reported, announced that the alert was raised on Friday in Berlin and its surroundings, as the animal sought out with a fever for more than 24 hours “not a lioness” but most likely a wild boar.

“I suppose there is no danger in Berlin and the surrounding area,” said Michael Gruber, mayor of this municipality southwest of Berlin, announcing the conclusion of the research, explaining that independent experts estimated using video of the animal, which was filmed at night, that it was “probably a wild boar.”

He said in a press conference that the decision to sound the alarm came in agreement with the police. “The authorities remain vigilant and, in the event of a change in the situation, are able at any time to return to service,” he added.

The alleged beast was seen and photographed by two bystanders on a Wednesday-Thursday night, and police believed they identified the lioness by watching the video.

Several policemen, supported by hunters, a vet, drones, and helicopters, were deployed to find the animal. Residents of several municipalities southwest of the capital have been called upon to avoid forested areas, many of them in the respective residential areas that extend into the affluent suburbs of Potsdam.

Alert messages were sent to residents’ smartphones using dedicated apps. Messages were also broadcast by the police over loudspeakers in the streets of southern Berlin.
