All about Rally New Zealand 2022!
Flashbacks: We have been in the heart of the village of Saint-Vith, southeast Belgium, for 27 years. Everyone is asleep, or about to fall asleep: a seven-year-old, fascinated by the television, is still awake.
Adventures that could have been completed more quickly if the circuit community had traveled in rally cars.
Why was New Zealand cut out for experimentation?
Before answering this question, we must first understand what a convex angle is, positive when the road descends toward the top of a bend (providing maximum gravitational stability) and negative when it isn’t. To put it simply: Roll the ball around a corner with a negative camber angle, and you’ll see it’s heading toward the trench outside the curve. Well, this is exactly what can happen to a car that takes the same angle very quickly.
Fortunately, New Zealand roads offer the majority of positive angles: “Honestly, it’s a great place to drive,” explains Jari-Matti Latvala, 2010 Rally winner. “I’m from Finland, and our roads are incredible…but New Zealand is better. You can get through some corners. Sweeping for third is in fifth. And when you get there, you really feel Gs going through your body as the car is being pushed into the turn. It’s a bit like dancing with it.” The tango that can end with the trees, huh.
Who will win this year?
“There is a whole generation of riders waiting to go on these roads,” said M-Sport driver Craig Breen. “Now it’s time!” We will not oppose it.
So feel free to catch all of this on Red Bull TV, from September 30 to October 2, 2022.
