Algeria, a traditional ally of Russia, reopens its embassy in Kiev
Algeria, Moscow’s traditional ally, said the reopening would take place “as soon as possible”. It described its relations with Ukraine as “normal”.
On Sunday, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Algeria, a traditional ally of Moscow, has decided to reopen its embassy in Kiev, which has been closed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine a year ago.
“This decision comes within the framework of protecting the interests of the Algerian state in this country, as well as the interests of the national community,” the ministry said in a statement. The same source added that the reopening of the embassy, which will be headed by the chargé d’affaires, will take place “as soon as possible.”
According to the Algerian diplomat, the activities of her embassy in Kiev are “frozen due to the deteriorating security situation.”
The distinguished Algerian-Russian relations are long-term
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had already announced Algeria’s decision to reopen its representation in Kiev on Friday evening during a televised interview with the local press. Abdelmadjid Tebboune made it clear that the Algerian-Russian relations are “known to all” and described the relations with Ukraine as “normal”.
Algeria and Moscow enjoy long-standing distinguished relations. In 2021, trade between the two countries will reach $3 billion. Algeria and Mokou also cooperate in the military field and within the framework of OPEC +, which includes 23 oil-producing countries, as well as the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).
