Spectacular Northern Lights Light Up New Zealand Skies
Nature – Australians and New Zealanders were treated to a stunning sight. On Tuesday 30 July, the Southern Lights lit up the night sky. This light show is the result of increased geomagnetic activity due to a solar storm.
The aurora borealis occurs when particles from the sun collide with the Earth's magnetic field. The result of these interactions is the appearance of bright lights in different colors, the most important of which are green, pink, red, and violet. This phenomenon is known as the aurora borealis in the southern hemisphere, and the aurora polaris in the northern hemisphere.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a Warn On Monday, July 29, visible aurora borealis is expected in the southern states of the country. The predictions proved correct, as a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun created a G2 (moderate) to G3 (strong) geometric storm.
Shared and appreciated offer
The Southern Lights, although less frequent than the Northern Lights, are no less impressive. Australians and New Zealanders did not fail to share this spectacle on social media.
Australia's Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Wildlife, Julie Collins, herself shared a photo on X (formerly Twitter) of the green and gold sky… with a wink to the Australian Olympic team wearing the same colours.
BOM noted that this activity could be extends Until August 1. Although visibility is subject to weather hazards, conditions that should remain favorable for the appearance of the new aurora borealis still promise great views to come.
