A strong earthquake shakes New Zealand

A powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook New Zealand’s South Island on Wednesday, September 20, 2023.

A powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, off the South Island of New Zealand, according to New Zealand seismology service GeoNet.

GeoNet said on its website that the epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 9:14 a.m. local time (11:14 p.m. French time), was 124 kilometers west of Christchurch, and at a depth of 11 kilometers.

Geonet reported that about 15,000 people felt the earthquake.

New Zealand lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide, and experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
