There has been speculation on the left field in recent weeks of Coates taking part in the British America’s Cup scene as Sir Ben Ainsley’s union represents the new record contender. Coates, the 1984 Finnish Olympic champion, put a rubber stamp on New Zealand’s entry to the SailGP this year, led by Kiwi stars Peter Berling and Blair Talk, including several other New Zealand America’s Cup winners.
Coates says he wants to expand his fleet from his current eight-nation position, and has hinted that teams from Italy and Germany may appear soon.
