A new era of tactical lift capability

A new era of tactical lift capability

On August 8, during a ceremony at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Marietta, Georgia, the first C-130J Super Hercules tactical airlifter was officially delivered to the New Zealand Defence Force and the New Zealand Ministry of Defence. This acquisition marks the beginning of an important era for New Zealand’s tactical airlift capability.

A strategic alternative to an aging fleet.

For nearly six decades, the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) C-130H has played a vital role as a first response asset, not only for New Zealand but for the entire Indo-Pacific region. The transition to the C-130J, operated by crews from 40 squadrons based at RNZAF Base Auckland at Whenuapai, represents a significant upgrade in terms of technology and capability.

Enhanced Capabilities of the C-130J-30

Rod McLean, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s Airlift and Maritime Missions product line, highlights the importance of this fleet to disaster relief operations and military partnerships. The C-130J-30 not only provides increased compatibility with allies, but also provides increased range and increased capabilities, which are essential to meet the most challenging tactical operational requirements.

Innovation and International Cooperation

The proposed acquisition of the C-130J-30 aircraft is part of a Foreign Military Sale (FMS) with the U.S. Air Force, initiated in 2020, to modernize the existing C-130H fleet. The joint project team, comprised of members from the New Zealand Ministry of Defence and the Defence Force, worked closely with the U.S. Air Force and Lockheed Martin to oversee the aircraft delivery and deployment training programs.

Pioneer in tactical transportation

The Super Hercules continues to set the standard for tactical lift missions with its many advantages, which set it apart from other medium-sized tactical transporters in production or operation today. These benefits include increased reliability, superior tactical airlift and combat airdrop capabilities, and certification by more than 20 airworthiness authorities.

Environmental impact and life cycle costs

The C-130J also has a low carbon footprint and low lifecycle costs, thanks to significant fuel savings compared to other medium-sized tactical transport aircraft. This efficiency contributes to a more sustainable and economically viable defence strategy for New Zealand.

Vision and Innovation at Lockheed Martin

As a global defense technology company, Lockheed Martin continues to drive innovation and scientific discovery through mission solutions for all domains and a vision for 21st century security that accelerates the delivery of transformative technologies.
