The Ananta app works on the principle of collaborative science: it collects information about marine mammals in the Bay of Biscay. Everyone can contribute. The goal: to identify species to better protect them.
Knowledge of protection is the doctrine of Ananta’s application. Released in summer 2023, it is aimed at all ocean lovers who frequent the Gironde coasts: divers, fishermen, boaters or simple coastal users.
Free access, allows you to enter your own photos and notes about marine mammals. GPS coordinates of observations, species seen, number of individuals… The goal is to create a database that did not exist before.
“Here we are in a big white area. Strandings are monitored, but little is done regarding live animals.“, explains Victoria Bowie. At the beginning of the project, she headed One Ocean, an association dedicated to the research and conservation of marine biodiversity on the coasts of the Gironde.

Data processing and sharing must inform the scientific community and the general public about the status of aquatic biodiversity. Ultimately, working to protect marine mammals.
The idea of collecting all this data is to collect it over the years and then make comparisons between different periods.

The app’s designers are hoping to get as many contributions as possible to create as comprehensive an inventory as possible. They are already planning to release a new, more efficient and more comfortable version during 2024.
