Drama against outsiders – New Zealand threatens to end the tournament
Despite the great advantage and the best chances, New Zealand lose to the history-making underdog Filipino. Now the co-host of the World Cup is threatened with an end.
New Zealand women’s football suffered its first World Cup setback on home soil. Five days after surprisingly winning their opening match against Norway, the host nation lost 1-0 to the Philippines in Wellington. Sarina Bolden scored the first goal against the Philippines (24th place) to achieve the first historic victory for the team that is participating for the first time in the World Cup.
That’s how the game went
In the New Zealand capital, the newfound self-confidence of the “football ferns” after the coup against Norway was noticeable from the start, but in front of 32,357 spectators, there were only a few convincing chances. And when the ball found its way in front of the Filipino goal, the powerful Filipino goalkeeper, Olivia McDaniel, was ready. Jackie Hand also failed at the inside post (64).
The supposed hand equalizer in the 69th minute was denied after video evidence. Crucial assist Hannah Wilkinson had previously started offside. Carleigh Frilles’ 2-0 (87′) lead was also taken away for offside.
New Zealand opened the World Cup finals with a historic 1-0 victory over former world champions Norway. The Philippines lost 2-0 to Switzerland, led by Inka Grings.
In the group final, the New Zealanders will take on Switzerland in Dunedin on Sunday, as well as the Philippines and Norway at the same time in Auckland (both from 9am BT on live on TOnline). If New Zealand cannot surprise the Swiss, there is already a risk of a group stage exit.
