Affecting both humans and our favorite hairballs, polydactyly is a deformity of the hand, foot, or foot depending on the species. This deformity results in a larger than normal number of fingers. An individual with polydactyly is born with one or more fingers. Such is the case of Macaroni, an adorable little ginger cat who emerged from her mother’s womb with six toes per paw in the United States.

Noodle is cute with his large claws, but it is actually a serious anomaly that would have seriously affected his quality of life if he had not been rescued in time for treatment. Fortunately, he was able to rely on volunteers from the Animal Rescue Society to provide him with the care he needed.

Polydactyly cats often have their legs crooked at birth

Friends for Life Rescue Network President Jacqueline Santiago offered to help immediately when she heard about a ginger kitten with abnormalities in the legs. Through her experience with special-needs cats, Jacqueline knew she could help this ball of fur.

Because of his six fingers on each claw and the limited space he had in his mother’s womb, Macaroni was born with contractile tendons. This is the reason why his front legs are twisted after he was born. As Jacqueline explains, The legs get stuck in one position during development and need to be stretched out over a period of weeks to help them develop properly Macaroni’s claws were curved inward, which would have prevented the cat from walking properly and even kneading her front paws as all other cats do. So Jacqueline picked him up when she only had 4 days to groom her intensively.

Thanks to physical therapy and splints, the noodle cat has made a lot of progress

From the beginning, Jacqueline started with a specific physical therapy program to relax the tendons. After each bottle, a few hours apart, the volunteer massaged and stretched the cat’s feet. Gradually, the tendons relaxed, and the cat’s condition improved. Even the noodles are starting to show his personality. Playful, cuddly, inquisitive and daring, Ginger Cat wastes no time wanting to explore from the top of his large, quirky paws and amazing gait.

The next step in rehabilitation was fitting splints to help Noodles position his front legs under him. ” His paws are a bit stubborn, so splints are done for a few days to help him get over the threshold of having his paws under him. As he grows, his weight will eventually reduce the rest,” adds Jacqueline. Splints combined with physical therapy have been particularly effective. Today, Macaroni is doing much better and looking for a new foster family while waiting to get ready to adopt him.
