The countdown to the FIFA Women’s World Cup has begun in Australia and New Zealand, and ZDF has put together a wide range of documentaries to get viewers in the mood for the big tournament. From informative insights into the structure of the Federation’s women’s team to stories about the social impact of female footballers – here’s an overview of the various programs broadcast on TV and at ZDFmediathek.

“I was born for this – more than just football”

Role Models, about soccer player Julia Gwynn, begins the Women’s World Cup documentary series. On Saturday, July 8, 2023, at midnight on ZDF (and at 10 a.m. on ZDFmediathek), viewers can learn about the life of Julia Gwen. As the face of rising German women’s football, she was unable to qualify for the World Cup due to injury. Julia Gwen will be a guest on “aktuelles sportstudio” on Saturday July 8, 2023 at 11pm and we look forward to the next tournament.

The documentary series “Born For This – More Than Football” provides another insight into the German women’s national team. The first excerpt from the series will be presented at “aktuelles sportstudio” and can be viewed on ZDF on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 9:45 pm. The full 60-minute film by Martina Hansel and Bjorn Tanneberger will be available on ZDFmediathek from July 14, 2023, at 9:45 p.m. The documentary series accompanies the team that lost the European Championship 2022 final to prepare for the World Cup at the end of June 2023. After the World Cup, episodes 2 to 4 will be shown in the ZDF media library.

“Female, Young, Star – How Female Football Players Are Changing the World”

“Sportstudio Reportage: Female, Young, Star – How Female Soccer Players Are Changing the World” will highlight the role of female soccer players in sport on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at 5:10 p.m. on ZDF. Presenter Andrea Petkovic met internationally famous footballers such as Melanie Leopolds, Nadine Angerer, Christine Sinclair, Nadia Nadim and Pia Sundhage. The auslandsjournal two-part documentary Women, Football, Freedom shows how football can be a platform for integration and social justice. ZDF correspondents report on the realities of life for young women in Egypt, Afghanistan, China, France, Iran and Ukraine and how football affects their personal and political trajectory. The documentary will be broadcast on ZDF on July 19 and 26, 2023 at 12:45 am and 12:15 am respectively. As of July 14, 2023 at 10 a.m., all six episodes will be available on the ZDF Media Library.
