Hunting cats for children causes anger
Feral cats are a big problem in New Zealand – at least that’s what the “North Canterbury Hunting Contest” claims. It urged children under the age of 14 to kill stray cats. According to “SPIEGEL”, they should receive a prize money of 141 euros as a reward.
The organizers of the competition warned children from New Zealand not to kill domestic cats. However, the search caused so much outrage on the Internet that the event was partially cancelled.
The SPCA expressed relief about the cancellation. Because no human being – especially children – is able to distinguish between skinned cats and feral cats. But the organizers were caught off guard by the storm of discontent they unleashed in New Zealand.
They have withdrawn the cat category “this year” but the children’s hunting competition is still going on. According to The Guardian, the event has taken place in New Zealand in recent years. The kids shot mainly opossums, hares and rabbits.
The fishing contest serves a good cause: Funds are being raised to support a school and swimming pool.
