New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has apologized for an insulting remark about an opposition politician – and the dispute has now been settled on a joint initiative. The 42-year-old described the leader of the liberal-right ACT party David Seymour as an “arrogant prick” (arrogant ass) in a parliamentary debate on Tuesday.
The statement wasn’t supposed to be made public, but Ardern didn’t realize her microphone was still on. This was heard by the whole House, and so it was recorded in the Official Records of Parliament.
Auction for Reconciliation: Funds for Prostate Cancer Patients
The Prime Minister had already apologized to Seymour. On Thursday, they both announced that they would be signing a framed print of the recording and auctioning it online for a good cause. The money should benefit an organization that cares for prostate cancer patients.
“We were able to laugh about the incident and put together a plan to raise money for a worthy cause,” said Seymour, 39. He said, “The beauty of this fundraiser is that it appeals to everyone. People who don’t like me, people who love me, people who don’t like Jacinda and people who love her — especially people who hate prostate cancer.” he. (dpa/p)
